Alum of the Month November 2007

Kelsy Cloutier '03
Veterinarian

From the time she was in kindergarten, Kelsy Cloutier has wanted to become a veterinarian. Soon her dream will be coming true!

Kelsy grew up in Palermo and remains thankful for teachers throughout her life who have really cared about her and her classmates. “At Erskine, students are lucky to have small classes where the teachers get to know the students well.” In particular, Kelsy thanks Mr. Robilliard, the late Mr. Ridgeway, Mrs. Tyrol (whose son she dated!), and Coach Jonassen for their guidance and support. Not only did she excel in academics and participate in field hockey and softball, she took four years of drama with Mr. Nored and feels that the State theater competition was the best experience of her high school life.

“Erskine makes it easy for students to get involved.” Kelsy was class president in both her freshman and sophomore years. “The kids probably thought I was a dork, but I really enjoyed being involved in so many things.”

After graduating from Erskine, Kelsy attended the University of New England in Biddeford, ME for one year to begin her medical training. She was impressed with the strong medical curriculum there—but just wished she had had more time for extra curricular activities. She then moved on to the University of Findley, in Findley, OH, where she began her three-year pre-veterinary studies with a double-major in biology/life sciences and physics, and a minor in chemistry.

This fall she moved to Columbus, OH, where she began her final veterinary training at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She reports that the professors are dynamic and the opportunities limitless. She’s already involved in a number of clubs. In December she will travel to a major animal shelter in New Orleans where she and other vet students will provide treatment and vaccination protocols and help round up strays still roaming the inner city.

“Erskine has played a significant role in my life, and I am honored to be featured on the Erskine alumni website. I hope everything is running smoothly in the New England area. I sure do miss it.”

We wish her the best of luck and hope she will come back to Maine and give us the benefit of her expertise and caring as a doctor of veterinary medicine.
